“…there is nothing wrong in being a fool where that has no effect.”
Nassim Nicholas Taleb, The Black Swan
“We think instinctively of science as a realm of pure objectivity, forgetting that it is still a pursuit of humans, with all their prejudices, hopes, arrogance, and other foibles.”
Samanth Subramanian
The cult members and enablers of Just Stop Oil, whatever their ages, are children playing at virtue in the context of their make-believe global warming apocalypse. They have a childish lack of understanding of the vital role energy has in a modern world. They have a childish lack of appreciation regarding the benefits of fossil fuels in providing affordable, reliable energy, which vastly outweigh the negative externalities. And they foolishly extend this childishness to actively crippling what should’ve been the next phase in the world’s technological advancement, one that would provide a vastly cleaner source of energy (ironically, one that produces no carbon dioxide): nuclear power.
A person who claims to believe in man-made global warming caused by the production of man-made carbon dioxide (which is dwarfed by naturally produced carbon dioxide) and caterwauls that this poses an existential threat to mankind, but who also is against nuclear power, is a child. A dangerous, goddamned child.
Their so-called virtue is phony as hell. Many of those engaging in the performative theater of Just Stop Oil and other similarly sanctimonious anti-carbon dioxide hysterics often have far larger “carbon footprints” than those of us who recognize that there is nothing unusual about the climate from either a historical or geological perspective. Actually, it’s worse than phony virtue. It is evil.
This accusation is not hyperbole for dramatic effect. If this anti-carbon dioxide cult gets its wish for the world to immediately cease using fossil fuels as an energy source, billions of people shall die. Billions. Many of these would be non-White people living in Third World countries who are utterly dependent—like the rest of us—on the miracle of modern agriculture, whose fossil fuel dependent operations have enabled mankind to feed far more people, far better and with staggering reliability.
Widespread famine is a horror of the past. Or so we thought. Just Stop Oil would make certain that this horseman of the apocalypse returns. Their smug sanctimony has supplanted within their brains any critical thinking skills that might morally weigh cost versus benefit and horrific consequences versus childish desires.
Do these fools care about the damage and death that results if the world stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow? Keep in mind that some of this cult’s adherents take their shrill illogic to its logical extreme: They advocate for there to be far fewer humans on earth and some even suggest the “culling” of the human population in order to reduce our overall “carbon impact” on the world. Wow, this sick idea is no different than the Nazis’ Final Solution, except it’s on a much grander scale and is accompanied by the laudations of jet-setting celebrity morons.
Fossil fuels provide far better lives for far more people than would be possible without using this critical energy resource. Fossil fuels have advanced the human condition and greatly extended lifespans. That is not to say there aren’t environmental concerns with their use. There are. But these can be dealt with. Just as the concerns with nuclear power can be dealt with. Nuclear power is an adult solution if one truly believes in man-made global warming. Unfortunately, this notion is beyond the understanding of the simpletons who block traffic and toss soup on works of art.
Stopping the use of fossil fuels without a robust nuclear power infrastructure is not just a childish solution, it is a modern-day Final Solution for ridding the world of billions of people, disproportionately ones who are poor and non-White. We’ve forgotten that we once swore to “Never forget.” And yet we once again do so.
