I love finding a great song from an artist I’d not previously heard of. These songs leave me wondering why they didn’t become a big hit at the time of their release, but I don’t pretend to be an expert on the public’s music tastes.
One of my favorite sources of these gems was an indie Asian music channel on cable, which used to showcase great songs: i amtv. Man, I miss the show Soundcheck that was on that channel. That’s where I first saw the Chinese duo IGO, the Japanese band Rip Slyme, and the Filipino band Sandwich.

- IGO: This Chinese duo released a great album “Synth Love,” which includes a longer version of this track: I prefer the shorter video version.
2. L.A. Tool & Die: I stumbled upon this L.A. Tool & Die video. It’s a fun, campy song.
3. Trouble Andrew: I first heard this song on a Havoc Sports video about snowboarding and spent a lot of time track it down (my pre-Shazam days).
4. Komeda: I don’t remember how I first came across this song, but I dig it!
5. Rip Slyme: This video has been seen millions, but many of those were probably in Asia. I’d love to spend a year living in this club, assuming these are actual chicks!
6. Sandwich: This Filipino band nailed it with an awesome song and video.
7. Stiffed: Another song that I first heard on a Havoc snowboarding video.
8. Bootblacks: A new release that the YouTube algorithm blessed me with.
